Raisin Bars, Granny’s Best


2 cups dark raisins

1 1/2 cup water

4 1/2 cups flour

1 tsp baking powder

1 tsp soda

1 tsp salt

2 1/2 sticks butter

2 cups sugar

3 eggs 1 tsp vanilla

1 tsp cinnamon

1/4 tsp nutmeg

1/4 tsp allspice

1 cup walnuts


Preheat oven 375° F.   Grease 15×10 jelly roll pan; set aside or 2 large loaf cake pans.


Over medium low heat mix raisins and water and bring to a boil, reduce heat and simmer 5 minutes.   Set aside to cool.   Cream butter, sugar, eggs and vanilla together; beat until fluffy.   Blend flour, baking powder, soda, salt and mix into cream mixture.   Add raisins and liquid, spices and nuts.   Mix well.   Bake until top of dough springs back when touched.   Cool completely.   Frost and cut into bars.   Makes 72 bars



1 stick butter

8 oz. soft cream cheese

1 tsp vanilla

2 cups powdered sugar.


Blend all together well.
