Granny’s Butter Button Cookies

1 cup butter, soft
1 1/2 cups powdered sugar
1/2 tsp cornstarch
1/2 tsp vanilla extract
1 1/2 cups flour

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Butter baking sheet.

Mix butter and 1/2 cup powdered sugar until well blended; mix in cornstarch, vanilla and flour until soft dough forms.

Divide dough into 4 equal pieces. Roll each piece on floured surface into foot long rope. Cut each rope into 12 pieces and roll into balls.

Bake on prepared baking sheet for 20 minutes, the tops will be pale and the bottoms will be golden. Cookies will not spread out.

Sift the remaining 1 cup powdered sugar. Add 12 warm cookies and toss to coat. While still warm poke 4 holes in a buttonhole pattern with a toothpick in each cookie. Cool completely before serving.
