Granny’s Death by Chocolate Cake

1 devils food chocolate cake mix, see variation below
1 cup chocolate chips, divided
2 cups fudge or chocolate syrup
1 pkg. chocolate pudding mix
1 ½ cups heavy cream or canned milk
1 cup whipped cream topping
1/4 cup cocoa powder

Mix cake according to directions on box, see variation below; pour into greased 9×13 cake pan. Bake 15 minutes; gently sprinkle ¾ cup chocolate chips over cake, and continue to bake another 15 minutes or so, until done. Remove from oven and poke holes with a wooden spoon in warm cake. Pour fudge syrup over cake. Allow cake to cool overnight, covered.

Frosting: Blend together chocolate pudding mix, heavy cream; mix in whipped cream and cocoa powder, Frost cooled cake and garnish with remaining chocolate chips.


Variation: use scratch cake in place of box mix.

Homemade Devils Food Chocolate cake:

1 cup boiling water
3/4 cup cocoa
1 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
1 1/2 tsps. baking soda
1/4 tsp. salt
2 cups sugar
10 Tbsps. butter, at room temperature
3 eggs
1 tsp. vanilla extract
1 1/4 cups buttermilk


Preheat an oven to 350 degree F. Lightly butter 9×13 baking dish. Dust with flour.


In a small mixing bowl whisk together boiling water and cocoa powder until smooth. Let cool completely.   In a mixing bowl, sift together flour, baking soda and salt. Set aside.


In a separate mixing bowl, cream sugar and butter until light and fluffy. Add eggs, one at a time mix well after each addition. Add vanilla and cooled cocoa mixture. Mix together well. Slowly mix in flour mixture.  Pour batter evenly into prepared baking dish.
