1 pkg. yeast
1 tsp salt
1 tsp cracked black pepper
2 cups flour
½ cup shortening
½ cup water
Place yeast, salt, pepper and 1 cup flour in bowl, set aside.
Place shortening and water in saucepan over low until water is warm, and shortening is completely melted. Remove from heat.
Beat liquid into dry ingredients until well mixed about 3 minutes. With wooden spoon stir in other cup of flour and knead 3 minutes. Set aside to rise to double in size, about 2 hours.
Turn bread onto floured board and divide into fourths. Divide each fourth into 12 pieces. With hand, roll each piece until 12 inch rope. Twist 2 ropes together loosely. Place on greased cookie sheet all 24 sticks. Beat egg and brush over breadsticks.
Bake at 350 degrees F for 25 minutes.
Topping if desired…
Immediately after removed from oven brush with melted butter and sprinkle with favorite seasoning: Parmesan cheese, garlic powder, Italian blend, onion powder, rosemary, parsley, salt and pepper…it is all a matter of taste. Enjoy!
Store in tightly covered container.
