Granny’s Black Walnut Bread


1/2 cup butter, room temperature

1 cup sugar
2 eggs
1 tsp vanilla
2 cups flour, all-purpose
1 tsp. baking soda
1/2 tsp. salt
1/3 cup buttermilk
1 cup apples, peeled and chopped
1/3 cup black walnuts, chopped

Topping, see recipe below


Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.    Grease 9 inch loaf pan.
Cream butter and sugar together; beat in eggs and vanilla.   Sift together flour, baking soda and salt; add to butter mixture alternately with buttermilk.  Fold in apples and walnuts.   Pour into prepared loaf pan; set aside.


1/3 cup flour
2 Tbsps. sugar
2 Tbsps. brown sugar
1/2 tsp. ground cinnamon
3 Tbsps. butter

Combine flour, sugar, brown sugar, and cinnamon. Cut in butter until crumbly.


Sprinkle topping over batter and bake 50 to 60 minutes or until knife inserted in center comes out clean.   Cool in pan for 10 minutes before removing.
